*REMINDER* “Working in the Woods Today” Museum Exhibit ~January 27th to April 22nd: ‘Working in the Woods Today’ is a photographic exhibit showcasing the recent history of logging that will be on display at the Museum at Campbell River beginning January 27, 2012. Curated by local photographer and writer Hans Peter Meyer, this exhibition features superb images with informative text about the men and women working in BC’s coastal forest industry in the 21st century. The exhibition is part of a bigger project to produce a large format photo book about BC’s coastal forest industry.
Meyer says that there is an abundance of images from the "glory days of logging," but almost nothing has been published since the 1950s about the industry as a place where real men and women work (in remote locations, and often under dangerous conditions). Meyer grew up in the Comox Valley, and as a young man, worked in the woods and on the booms, and then for several more years in reforestation. In 2002, he started photographing the coastal forest industry, first for Truck Logger Magazine. Examples of his work can be seen at www.coastalforestindustryproject.com.  Be sure to come and see these outstanding photos while there are here! Advocating a humane, gentle and respectful approach to working with horses, Brannaman calms some of the most difficult animals while exhibiting extraordinary communication and control. Having served as the inspiration for Robert Redford's film The Horse Whisperer, the legendary actor appears in this film as one of Brannaman's countless supporters and admirers, citing his extraordinary talents in communicating with horses. The film follows Brannaman across the United States where he is in constant demand, teaching seminars to those eager to learn from the master and change the manner in which horses are trained.

TUESDAY February 7th

Le Havre ~ CR Film Festival: No other contemporary filmmaker manages to blend deadpan, ironic humour with social commentary in quite the same manner as Finnish master. An official selection of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival®, Le Havre has received overwhelming critical acclaim, and has recently been named Finland's submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 84th Academy Awards®. Atmospheric, quiet and completely assured, Kaurismäki tells a highly contemporary story about illegal refugees, a subject of immediate relevance in today's Europe. The film circles around Marcel Marx, a warm, aging bohemian artist who has retreated to the French port city of Le Havre and taken up work as a shoeshine man - a profession with a limited future, as everyone seems to be wearing running shoes. He is married to a woman with a heart of gold and, despite their poverty and limited means, he finds joy in their local neighbours, all of whom seem as if they have emerged intact from a 1930s movie. One day, Marcel befriends Idrissa, a young African immigrant hoping to make his way to England in a shipping container with other illegals. Marcel is determined to extend a helping hand to the wide-eyed boy. Starts at 7pm at the Tidemark Theatre. Cost is $12. For more info call 250-287-7465.
