Only 2 more days to go until Canada Day 2011 and the excitement can already be seen racing through the town! Campbell River is once again going to be the place to be not only on our country's birthday, but also in the days leading up to it!
If you've recently gone by the Frank James Park in Willow Point, you've probably noticed the large pieces of wood finally being put in place for one of the town's most popular annual events, Transformations on the Shore. Woodcarvers from all over the world are arriving in Campbell River and preparing for the first day of the competition, which will begin tomorrow at 7 am. The event will continue even past Canada Day to July 3rd, where carvers will show their completed works and wait for the final judging. Anyone is welcome to view these amazing artists in action from 7am to 7pm every day, or even to head down later on in the evening to wander through and watch the progression.
Canada Day celebrations will be startig early in town with Campbell River's Kick off to Canada Day taking place on June 30th. This is a great opportunity to get into the national spirit early and let it spread through 2 days of non-stop fun. After all, why only celebrate for one day when you can for two?!
The Senior's Canada Day Celebration will be taking place this year on Thursday, June 30th. Throughout the day it will be rotated through different venues, all of which are listed below:

This is a great opportunity to get together with friends and celebrate the upcoming Canada Day, as well as a time to head out with your parents or grandparents and find some events to take part in together.
Thanks to Grieg Seafood's generous help, we will be having a fantastic fundraising Salmon BBQ Thursday night beginning at 6 pm at the Spirit Square. If this doesn't give you enough reason to come downtown to get involved, then how about a free concert to compliment the BBQ? The ever popular band The Impalas will be once again coming to perform at the Spirit Square Thursday night. This band has proven to be a crowd favorite and due to popular demand, has agreed to come back to Campbell River for an encore performance!
Once July 1st hits, events will continuously be taking place all through town. Willow Point will be given the opportunity to hold the first event of the day, the Fire Fighter's Pancake Breafast at Frank James Park. From 8am to 11am Friday morning, the Campbell River Fire Fighters will be providing a delicious breakfast of pancakes and sausage for all interested in return for a donation to the Burn Fund.
After you're finished with breakfast, you can head on over to the Skateboard Park at the Sportsplex to watch the Salmon City Jam competition beginning at 11 am and going until 3 pm. Although, once 12 pm hits you might have to take a small break in order to grab a piece of Canada Day Cake at the Frank James Park!
In Downtown Campbell River, a large host of events have been planned to keep the crowds excited and eliminate any possible "dull moments." The first event downtown will be the Huck Finn Fishing Derby taking place at the Discovery Fishing Pier. Beginning at 9am and going until 12pm, this is a great event to take the kids too and try out your luck!
E&B Helicopters will once again be offering the chance to go out on a tour of Campbell River this year in their E&B Helicopter Rides, an amazing opportunity at a great price. They will be offering these mini tours from 10 am to 5 pm out of the E&B Hanger.
For those looking for things to do with their kids, the Children's Festival will be beginning at 10 am this year at the Community Centre. If you're looking for something a little different and exciting, head on over to Shopper's Row to watch this year's Home Hardware Belt Sander Races. This event is by no question one of the highlights of Campbell River's Canada Day celebrations, and an event that is not easy to find any other time or place!!
There will be a great variety of crafts, food, rides, face painting and of course live entertainment taking place from 11 am to Dusk at the Ostler Park, as well as live entertainment from 11am to 3 pm at the Spirit Square.
The Hospital Foundation and Daybreak Rotary will be hosting this years Bed Races on Shoppers Row from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. Come and view the homemade bed racers and find out who will triumph in this unusual race!
Missed the Salmon BBQ on Thursday night? Well you've got another chance on Friday! The Fire Fighters will be hosting the Canada Day Salmon BBQ at the Robert Ostler Park Longhouse by donation beginning at 1 pm. There will also be a Senior's Honour Tea beginning at 1 pm at the Museum.
The always popular and well looked forward to Canada Day Parade will be beginning this year at 4pm, starting at the Campbell River Common and going through downtown to return to the common. You can find a map of the parade's route down here at the Visitor Centre, or on the Salmon Festival's website.
The Opening Ceremonies and Cake will finally begin at 5:30pm at the Robert Ostler Park by the entertainment stage, so make sure your around for some either before dinner or after dinner dessert and some great words of wisdom.
And of course, the question you've all been thinking the entire time you've been reading this...when are the fireworks going to happen?! The always spectacular Quality Foods Festival of Lights will begin at 10:22 pm. So sit and enjoy, and let yourself find your inner child as you watch the spectacle.

Last Week of June 2011
The summer seems to be speeding by as we head into the last week of June and get ready for Campbell River's Canada Day celebrations!
Serious Coffee will be holding thier weekly open stage night at their Willow Point location in Campbell River tonight beginning at 6pm. Head on down to enjoy some great local music, or show your talent in a performance of your own!
On Tuesday there will be another Lunch in the Square at the Spirit Square downtown. Tomorrow's performer will be Eric Benson, a BC artist who plays amazing acousitc and folk rock sets. Grab a bagged lunch and take a nice relaxing break from 11:30 am to 1 pm as you enjoy some free music.
Wednesday night, Serious Coffee will be holding their Jam Night beginning at 6:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for musicians to come together and share their music in a relaxed setting. However, anyone is welcome to come in and join, or even just sit and enjoy.
The 1st Annual Comox Taxi Team Charity Golf Tournament begins on Wednesday at 1:30pm at Glacier Greens. This event benefits the Comox Military Family Resource Centre and LINC Youth Centre. There is a $110 entry fee for this event.

The Clean Living Initiative team will once again be heading out this Thursday to remove rubbish from Campbell River's sidewalks, one block at a time. This week they will be starting at 4 pm at 557 Alexander Drive. If you would like to participate or find out more information, please call Susan Black at 250-286-4838.

Aboriginal Day and the First Day of Summer!
Welcome to the first day of Summer, and the beautiful sunshine that seems to have come with it! Many will be heading outside today to soak up as much sun as they can, and the Aboriginal Day celebrations are providing that perfect opportunity. Today, the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people welcome the community to come join in the celebration of diversity and culture through a series of hosted events.
The opening ceremony will begin at 10am at the Spirit Square, followed by a parade down to the Lach-kwil-tach Nations Bighouse. From 12pm - 4pm, there will be free events taking place at Campbell River's cruise ship terminal. These will include Arts and Crafts Shows, Traditional regalia and singing, BBQ fish, and a Fashion Show put on by the House of Treasures. Celebrations will continue into the evening at the Spirit Square, where from 6pm - 8pm there will be performances by local First Nation and Metis entertainers with guests. Performers will include Lachkwiltach blues rockers Bentwood Boyz, Alex Harry, Metis fiddler John Flett and Klahoose International singer Brenda Hanson.
This afternoon will also mark another day to come out and enjoy the Lunch in the Square at the Spirit Square. From 11:30 am to 1 pm, perfomer Anela Kahiamoe will be performing and in this gorgeous weather, its the perfect time to get out in the sun for an hour while enjoying lunch!
Tommorow, Strathcona gardens will be holding their Wet and Wild Kickoff in celebration of the end of school (finally)! Grab your water toys and head on over to have a swim and cool off, as well as participate in the many activities planned from 6:30pm-8pm. This is a free event and all ages are welcome!
Also at 6:30pm will be Serious Coffee's Jam Night down in Willow Point. This is a great chance for musicians to sit around and share music in an informal, relaxed setting. Everyone is welcome to either come participate, or to just sit and enjoy. Come early though because this event tends to fill up fast!
Throughout this last month the Concert in the Square series has been a huge success with many coming down every week to participate. This Thursday proves to be no different with the band Cat arriving to provide entertainment and pump energy through the crowd. Cat promises songs by Adele and Molly Johnson as well as other favorites. Grab your lawn chairs and come on down to enjoy this free event!
The Vancouver Island Music Festival will also be taking place this Thursday at the Sid Williams Theatre at 6pm.
The Rod Brind'Amour 16th Annual Golf Classic will be held on Saturday, June 25th at the Story Creek Golf Club and will be an all day event. This is a fantastic event to participate in as all proceeds go towards the Campbell River chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Dinner and the Auction will be held at the Sportsplex, and the doors will open at 6pm. Come out and enjoy the sun and help support the cause!
Franco Fete will be held on Saturday as well at the Mer-et-montagne School on Evergreen. This will be a great, free family fun event to participate in, and will be held in 2 languages! From 2pm-5pm a Fun Fair will be put on with prizes, a silent auction, young entrepeneurs, Fanny Starchild, clowns, face painting, music, and magic. Beginning at the same time and going till 7pm will be a number of local talents, a Franophone market, French music, and of course food. Beginning at 7:30 will be the Starchild Entertainment Show, a performance defiantly worth checking out!
As many are probably aware, Campbell River's "Gardens in Bloom" Annual Garden Tour is this Saturday from 10am - 4pm. Tickets are $15 and give you the opportunity to experiance the many beautiful gardens in town, while at the same time enjoying the fresh taste of summer. The gardens participating in this tour have never failed to amaze!
The Pier Street Market will once again be happening this Sunday from 9am - 2pm next to the Maritime Heritage Centre. Vendors will include baking, fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, and a great number of talented artisans. The opportunity to go for ice cream after your exploration of the market is also a hard thing to resist.
The Tidemark Theatre and 99.7 The River will be teaming up this Sunday with the Campbell River Salmon Festival to present the Forestry Family Fun Day. This free event will feature logger sport demonstrations, music, games, fun photos, facepainting, old chainsaw displays, logging trucks, ugly logging boot competition, a special logging history display, food, fun and more! It will begin at 11 am and continue on to 2pm.
Also on Sunday, the Dolphins Resort will be presenting Freeman and Hill, a folk music concert beginning at 1pm. No cover charge is necessary, but make sure to call ahead and make your reservations right away as the room fills up quickly! A Tapas menu will be available.

The upcoming forcast is looking great and has given us a gorgeous day to celebrate Father's Day! Take Dad out for a delicious brunch on the patio, or a walk in the trails. You could even grab your Dad and head on over to Longlands Golfcourse, where Dad's can golf for free from 8 am to 7 pm.
The 44th Annual Dad's Day Pancake Breakfast is taking place from 8am to Noon today at the Campbell River Community Hall. Want something a little fancier? Why not head down to enjoy Father's Day by the sea at Painters Lodge. Brunch will be held from 10 am - 2 pm, and they are also putting on Father's Day Zodiac tours for only $25!!

Discover Campbell River Day!
Tomorrow, June 18th, is the Campbell River Visitor Centre's much talked about event, Discover Campbell River Day! From 10 am to 4 pm there will be booths set up all through the Spirit Square from companies throughout town to show you the many opportunities provided to both the citizens of Campbell River and visitors to the town who are looking for an bit of an adventure. From the Museum to whale watching, come find out what's in store for you! This is also a great opportunity to come down and ask us about different things to do around town and get some ideas for summer events.
Our Visitor Centre Scavenger Hunt will also be due on Saturday, so make sure you bring your finished form down in order to have a chance at the grand prize!

A New Week, A New Adventure!
Looking for something to keep you busy for the day? How about heading over to Campbell River's own Pier Street Market taking place by the Maritime Heritage Centre today from 9-2. There are great artist booths to explore, as well as places to grab an awesome breakfast and coffee while enjoying some music by the water.
Once you finish there, head on over to the Timberline High School gym to check out the Rock and Gem show put on by the Ripple Rock Gem and Mineral Club. This is a great event to take the kids to, and admission is only $3 per person.
Tuesday will be the second Lunch in the Square of this summer, a chance to come down from 11:30 am to 1 pm to enjoy some free music in the Spirit Square while have lunch. This week's musical performer will be Roy Ashdown.
Last Thursday we had an amazing performance at the Spirit Square by the band Time Well Wasted, and this week promises to be just as good. Voices Three will be beginning their performance on June 16th at 7 pm. Grab your lawn chairs and be prepared for a promising night.
On Friday, June 17th, the event that many have been looking forward to is finally coming to town! The 21 Gun salute to Green Day will be taking place at the Tidemark theatre beginning at 7pm. Look forward to a high energy night featuring Campbell River's own Marv "St. Jimmy" Westrum as Billie Armstrong, Jayme "The Disappearing Boy" Langen as Mike Dirnt, and Gary "Drumheller" Langen as Tre Cool. Tickets are $20 dollars and can be bought at the Tidemark Theatre.

What to do this week.....
Hello all!
Looking for things to do this week in beautiful Campbell River? How about going to see this summer's first Lunch in the Square. Today, starting at 11:30 am, musical artist Emily Spiller will be performing in the Spirit Square until 1 pm and everyone is invited to head on down and listen to this great free performance.
If your looking to continue on with your musical experiance, Wednesday evening means another Jam night at Serious Coffee in Willow Point. Everyone is welcome to come in and join, or just sit and listen.
Thursday night is going to be a big night in the Spirit Square as the River Concert Series presents thier first performance of the summer, Comox Valley's own Time Well Wasted, an impressive 11-piece band with 3 vocalists and a horn section. Hot coffee will be available on site to enjoy while listening.
As much of you have probably heard through both fundraising and the newspaper, Campbell River's Relay For Life will be taking place on Friday, June 10th beginning at 7pm. Campbell River has always been a great supporter of this event, and the community is always able to pull together to send a immense contribution to this great cause, so why not come by Pheonix Middle School and celebrate our success?!
This Saturday is going to be a great chance to get out of the house and enjoy the many events going on! At the Quinsam Hall there will be the River of Thunder Show & Shine 2011, which will include a Bike Rodeo, Toy Run, Battle of the Bands, Beer Gardens and much more! There will even be a dance at night featuring the very popular band Mr. Completely. The dance tickets for this are $20 and are on sale at White Hat Cleaners, Super Video and Steve Marshall Ford.
The annual Rock and Gem Show, put on by the Ripple Rock Gem and Mineral Club, will also be held on Saturday at the Timberline gym. Admission is $3 and the event will also be taking place on Sunday, June 12th.
For those of you looking to take part in some volunteer services, the Broom Bash 2011 will be held on Saturday beginning at 10 am at the Myrt Thompson Trail off the end of Maple Street. This is an annual event held in order to join together to remove harmful, invasive plants in the Campbell River Estuary. All equipment will be provided for those wishing to join in, as well as coffee and timbits.
And, of course, the 2nd annual Wine and Blues Festival by the Sea presented by Campbell River's Daybreak Rotary will also be taking place on Saturday at the Maritime Heritage Building beginning at 6pm. Tickets are $50 and can be bought right here at the Campbell River Visitor Centre, at the Royal Coachman Liquor Store, or at the Merecroft Village Liquor Store. Come and enjoy the great appys, music, and of course wine provided for you!

2011 Rotary Wine Fest
Rotary will be once again hosting their Wine Festival this year on June 11th, providing a great opportunity to escape your house for a night and enjoy some good wine while looking out over the ocean. There will also be an assortment of appetizers such as fruit, cheese and crackers, and even sushi!
You can come and learn about the different varities of wine, listen to some music, and participate in the auctions in a chance to win some awesome prizes. Rotary will use the funds raised from this event to be put into helping Campbell River!
Tickets are $50 and available at a number of locations, included right here at the Campbell River Visitor Centre!

First Week of June
Welcome to the first week of June! Although the month has started off on a slightly wet day, we're hoping it's just a sign of the good weather to come.
There are quite a few exciting things to check out around Campbell Rive this week. Tonight, of course, is the start of the Vancouver Canucks vs. Boston Playoff games. Come into town and find a place to celebrate with your fellow hockey fans and cheer on your team!
If Hockey isn't your thing, Serious Coffee in Willow Point will be having its weekly Jam Session tonight beginning at 6:30 pm, a good chance to enjoy a nice environment with great music.
On Friday, June 3rd, the Dragonboat Fundraiser will be taking place at the Maritime Heritage Centre. They will be putting on a night of Murder, Mystery and Suspicion as they go through the tale of Giorgio Tortellini. Guests have the chance to be part of the action in interpretating clues while enjoying delicious appetizers provided by Chedder & Co. Tickets are available at Chedder & Co. on Shoppers Row for $35 and the event will begin at 6:30 pm Friday.
Friday will also provide an opportunity to join in on the open mic night at Serious Coffee, an event perfect for a family night out, or even some fun with some friends.
Saturday, June 4th will mark another Ocean's Day in Campbell River and everyone is welcome to come down to the Maritime Heritage Centre to celebrate. There will be exhibits, touch tanks, boat safety, free fishing at the pier, a bounce-a-rama, dunk tank and of course some music to help liven the event.
The Knights of Columbus will be hosting their 8th annual Lobster Dinner on Saturday night beginning at 5pm, where guests will be offered Atlantic Lobster, spuds, salads and of course dessert. Entertainment will be provided by the Tara School of Irish Dancing and a silent auction (and of course the hockey game). Tickets can be aquired at the Parish office for $30 each.
On June 6th and 7th, Campbell River will be hosting the Van Isle 360, an International Yacht race. The 6th will also be another open mic night at Serious Coffee in Willow Point from 6-9pm.
